Meet Darren Earnshaw
A lifelong ice cream lover, Darren had helped out at Dixon’s for five years before he bought the franchise to open a second shop in 2016. He has 11 permanent staff, although in the hotter weather that number can expand to 15 or more.

Darren had banked at The Royal Bank of Scotland since taking on the franchise, attracted by an offer of two years’ free banking. As luck would have it, Business Banking Switch came about at just the right time.
Why did the scheme interest you?
‘When our introductory offer ran out, I was pretty keen to move banks because as a small company, suddenly having to pay charges on every deposit, Direct Debit and standing order made a dent in our profits. But as Business Banking Switch told us to expect some great offers, I hung on, and went online the day it launched. I’m so glad I waited because the offers were really good. There was a wide choice including free banking, the support of a dedicated Relationship Manager and some huge cash incentives. I’d have been disappointed if I’d switched banks earlier and missed out.’
Why did you choose the offer you did?
‘Being a cash business we need a bank with a local branch nearby, so this is what I looked for. I registered an interest in three banks which offered me equally generous cash incentives combined with a long free banking period. But in the end I went for the same bank I use for my personal account, thinking I could get all my banking done at once. As we import a lot of our flavourings from Italy, we’re always vulnerable to currency fluctuations and price rises. The cash incentive will give us the chance to bulk buy certain orders so we can lock down our costs.’
How did you find the service?
‘The whole process was smooth and quick. I checked out my offers online then made a shortlist. This was really easy as I knew what I wanted and all the offers were very good. I’m now just waiting for final confirmation of my switch.’
