The Co-operative Bank

We are the bank for people with purpose. We are The Co-operative Bank. A customer-led ethical bank driven by co operative values. We harness the power of 'we' to make a positive difference to the lives of our customers and their communities. Our bank was born from the co-operative movement over 145 years ago. Founded on the co-operative values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equity, equality and solidarity, we’ve been pioneering this different way of banking ever since.

These co-operative values are more than the foundations of the bank; they are what bring us together – colleagues, customers, the businesses who bank with us, the charities we support and the issues we stand for. We are a community of people that get involved rather than stand on the side-lines. We are the colleagues that are committed to helping our customers. We are the co-operatives, credit unions, charities and small businesses who have proven that our combined strength can build both a stronger economy and society. We are the customer views shaping our ethical policy – steering our choices in who we provide banking to. This is the key reason why people and organisations who share these values choose to bank with us. Our customers know their money won’t be used in ways that conflict with our Ethical Policy and they also know that they’re supporting their local communities simply by choosing to bank with us.

Here’s why businesses trust us with their banking:
- Providing free banking and award-winning Business Current Accounts
- Our award winning Business Directplus Current Account was rated Five Stars by Moneyfacts in 2018.
- Our Community Directplus account also gives registered charities, community interest companies, co-operatives and credit unions an ethical way to bank for free.

And here are a few of our most recent awards:
1. We were the winner of The Best Service from a Business Bank at the Business Moneyfacts awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and The Best Charity Banking Provider by Moneyfacts from 2016 -2019.
2. Our branches were voted Best Branch Network in The 2019 Moneyfacts Consumer Awards.

We’ve got all your business needs covered:
We have a number of ways you can bank; through our online banking platform, over the phone through our UK call centres, or by visiting one of our award-winning branches. You can even pay in cash or cheques via your local Post Office® by arrangement.

A bank you can trust with your business:
Our unique banking approach means our offer is compelling to many different types of SME businesses, whether a pioneering start-up, sole trader, a caring community-focused charity or forward-thinking co-operative or social enterprise. We look after the banking needs of over 90,000 SMEs, 700 co-operatives, 5,000 charities, and 279 credit unions. In 2017, we lent around £40m to charities and social enterprises, and £23m to co-operatives and mutuals.

Providing funding to support local projects and fundraising activities:
Our Community Directplus account holders can apply for up to £1,000 from our customer donation fund to support special projects and fundraising activities. Since 2003, we’ve donated over £770k to 893 organisations.
